Founded in 1994 in Dallas, Action Metals has grown steadily as a family-owned processor of nonferrous and ferrous scrap, handling a wide range of grades for a loyal customer base.
According to company President Boris Grinstein, the most recent growth spurt for Action Metals prompted the need for a new baler. “I was using a small horizontal baler which we had outgrown a long time ago,” Grinstein says. “Our yard is very small, and space is an extremely valuable commodity to me. I needed a baler that had a small footprint, would maintain our production needs and help keep our yard clean and organized.”
Grinstein knew the baler had to handle numerous types of materials and must be reliable. After doing considerable research, he concluded he was “ready to make the jump to a two-ram with an auto tie; I knew the Harris Badger was the right machine for me.”
A testament to its sturdiness, the Badger works as much overtime as any employee at Action Metals. “We run the baler seven days a week, anywhere between 70 to 80 hours per week,” Grinstein says. At Action Metals, the Badger bales one to two truckloads of nonferrous metals daily.
Numerous features have made the Badger well-liked at Action Metals. “We feed the baler with a skid steer and love the wide hopper opening of the baler,” Grinstein says. “This allows us to feed the baler with larger, bulkier scrap like sheet aluminum and extruded aluminum, without worrying about the machine getting jammed up.”
Grinstein says he is not alone in appreciating the merits of the Harris model. “The baler is extremely easy to operate, and my employees were operating it by themselves after two days of training,” he says.
For Grinstein and Action Metals, the Badger has provided a tremendous first impression of Harris equipment. “This is the first Harris baler I have ever purchased, and I am extremely pleased with its performance,” he says. “The badger is a stout machine and can withstand the rough scrap yard environment.” That environment includes the warm Texas summers.
“I have had no downtime with this machine,” Grinstein says, although when he has questions about it, he credits Robinson, Texas-based Harris dealer Rise Equipment for its ability to always respond “very quickly.”
“I highly recommend this baler,” Grinstein says. “This machine has transformed my operation drastically. We always had the volume to go direct but lacked the infrastructure and equipment to do so. This machine was the missing piece of the puzzle and definitely is a huge asset to Action Metals.”
