Recycleye, MSS partner to advance sorting technology
Optical sorting equipment manufacturer MSS Inc., headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, and British technology company Recycleye have announced a strategic partnership in North America they say will combine their strengths and bring new sorting technology to the waste and recycling sectors.
Recycleye artificial intelligence (AI) technology has been incorporated with MSS’ optical sorting solution, creating what MSS says is a powerful new family of offerings known as MSS Vivid (Visually Verified Identification) AI. This new solution is unique among current AI detection and extraction offerings in that it combines Recycleye AI vision systems with MSS air-ejection system capabilities to sort material at the highest volumes, the company adds.

Using field-proven air ejection as the extraction method allows recyclers to run higher belt speeds, process more volume and eject side-by-side materials on a belt similar to optical sorting but without the limitations of a mechanical effector that is commonly used with robots. MSS says MSS Vivid AI combines rapid-sorting air jets with granular real-time data provided by AI that plant managers need to drive efficiency and profitability in their material recovery facilities.
With MSS’ background, the company says it can pair the right detection method with the right extraction method. Within the family of products, MSS also can offer a mechanical robot paired with Recycleye AI technology, which can be more suitable in certain applications. Additionally, the companies can pair the AI vision system with a near-infrared (NIR) sensor or metal detection.
MSS Vivid AI can detect black plastics and subtle differences in object color, shape and texture as in the case of sorting used beverage cans (UBCs) from non-UBC aluminum or polyethylene terephthalate (PET) thermoforms from PET bottles. Recycleye’s AI (known as Recycleye Vision) also can identify food-grade from nonfood-grade plastics.
Customers buying MSS Vivid AI will benefit from the established customer service offered by MSS, a CP Group company, which means technicians are available for on-site response and rapid access to replacement parts overnight across the U.S.

Eggersmann expands dealer network in US
Eggersmann North America GmbH has expanded its dealer network in the United States.
Compass Equipment Inc., located in Oroville, California, has been named Eggersmann North America’s exclusive dealer for California, Nevada and Hawaii, while Quality Fleet Service Inc. is the exclusive Eggersmann dealer for shredders and screens in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
Compass Equipment now provides sales, parts and service support for the Eggersmann product lines of high-torque single- and dual-shaft shredders, trommel screens and star screens. The company holds inventory for sale, demo and rental.
Eggersmann says that with more than 50 years in business and good sales and service coverage, Compasswill focus on the growing recycling, environmental and organics industry by representing Eggersmann product lines.
Quality Fleet Service, located in South Hadley, Massachusetts, was founded in 2005 by Nicholas Moynihan and has grown throughout New England by carrying well-known brands in the construction equipment industry, according to Eggersmann. Crown Shred builds MRF in Saskatchewan
Crown Shred & Recycling Inc. is building a 30 ton-per-hour single-stream material recovery facility (MRF) in Regina, Saskatchewan, with equipment supplied by Norwalk, Connecticut-based Van Dyk Recycling Systems.
As single-stream popularity has grown in western Canada, Crown Shred CEO Anatoli Davidian saw an opportunity to construct a highly automated system using advanced technology. The new facility anticipates a substantial increase in the volume of material processed by Crown Shred, which will bring in material from up to 500 miles away.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a decrease in recycling rates and an increase in single-use plastics and packaging waste, presenting new challenges for the recycling industry,” Davidian says. “Crown Shred’s new facility is equipped with advanced sorting and separation systems that can effectively process a wide range of materials to help address these challenges and mitigate the impact of the pandemic on the recycling industry.”
He says the MRF’s main goal is to provide a sustainable waste management solution that encourages higher recycling rates and contributes to a cleaner, healthier environment.
The MRF was designed to increase the efficiency of the recycling process. It can process a variety of materials, including plastics, paper, cardboard, glass and metals.
Crown Shred chose Van Dyk to supply the equipment and build the MRF, with Davidian saying, “Van Dyk has a deep understanding of the latest technology, processes and equipment needed to deliver a high-quality recycling solution. Their approach to sustainability was a perfect match for Crown Shred’s own commitment to environmental responsibility.”
The sorting process is highly automated, reducing the risk from contamination and ensuring materials are properly sorted for maximum value, according to a news release from Van Dyk. The MRF is designed to minimize the environmental impact of recycling, optimize resource use and reduce energy consumption.
Van Dyk says equipment began to arrive in late April.
“Van Dyk’s customer-centric approach was another important factor in the decision to partner with them,” Davidian says. “Their willingness to collaborate closely with Crown Shred and their ability to deliver the facility in a timely manner gives us confidence that the new facility will meet our unique needs and specifications.”
