Wheel Loaders Help Crush Cars for Local Recycler

A portable crushing machine and a small fleet of wheel loaders and skid steers help A to Z Recycling, Wichita, Kan., crush 250 tons of cars a day. “We’re completely mobile and can to where the cars are,” says Vince Wilson, co-owner of A to Z Recycling. “Salvage yards contact us and when they have a load to be recycled, we go out, crush and take them away.”

The portable crushing machine can crush five cars at a time, which are loaded onto flatbed trucks. The cars are then hauled to Chaparral Steel Co., Middlothian, Texas, and melted down into items such as reinforcing bars for concrete construction.

Wilson says he was able to customize a Case 95XT with bigger cylinders from Case for the 7-foot grapple-bucket attachment. “We’re able to pick up a car with the Case 95XT and either place it on the five-car pile to be put into the crusher by one of our wheel loaders or the skid steer places it in the crusher,” he says.

Wilson had high compliments for the 95XT’s maneuverability and efficiency. “We call our 95XT the ‘pig’ because it noses its way into a job, gets it done and needs very little in the way of maintenance.”
