Ohio iron foundry plans to add aluminum capacity

Hubbard, Ohio-based iron castings foundry Ellwood Engineered Castings is reportedly seeking tax abatements so it can expand into the aluminum castings sector.

According to an online report from the Warren, Ohio-based Tribune Chronicle, Ellwood is seeking tax abatements from Hubbard Township trustees in Northeast Ohio to help enable it to undertake a $52 million investment to add an aluminum casting line.

The metals producer reportedly has received approval of its request from the township, and the firm has stated the additional aluminum production line will create more than 30 jobs at the foundry. The abatements still require approval from a commission in Trumbull County, Ohio.

Ellwood currently makes what it calls “the largest iron castings available in North America,” including gray iron castings up to 160 tons in weight and ductile iron castings that can weight up to 60 tons.

The firm’s iron foundry melt shop consists of three, 55-ton induction furnaces that have the ability to melt up to 10,000 tons per month of pig iron and ferrous scrap. Many of the ingot molds in the company’s current product line are used in steel mills.
