Texas State Agency Approves Computer Recycling Mandate
The state of Texas has approved legislation that mandates manufacturers selling computers in the state provide a method to collect obsolete devices from customers for free.
Under the law, computer retailers will not be able to sell computers from manufacturers that do not have a method to collect computers for recycling.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) passed regulations in late May that, while requiring free and convenient recycling of the older equipment, does not yet establish standards for convenience.
The program will begin Sept. 1 and makes Texas the fourth state to require computer makers to offer recycling services.
