E-World Recyclers, a California-based processor of electronic scrap, announces that it is one of the first companies in the United States to become certified under the RIOS/R2 guidelines.
The company will be recognized for its accomplishments during ISRI’s National Convention and Expo May 4-9 in San Diego.
“There has been a growing need in the electronics recycling industry, for some objective way to demonstrate who is handling electronic scrap materials properly,” says Lyle DeStigter, E-World’s COO. “We are very happy to be in the first wave of those certified under these protocols.”
The R2 Responsible Recycling document was developed by a multi-stakeholder group, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The purpose of the R2 document is to provide a set of practical procedures for electronics recyclers that can be audited and which will ensure safer and more environmentally sound recycling practices.
“This is a comprehensive quality, environmental health and safety management system developed by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries. R2, however, is primarily concerned with best practices for handling materials commonly found in end-of-life electronics. The two certifications work well together and I think we will see many electronics recyclers in the next few years wanting to fly the RIOS/R2 banner,” says Jonathan Golding, environmental health and safety coordinator for E-World Recyclers.
