WASTE MANAGEMENT GETS CONTRACT

The City of Oakland, Calif., recently announced that it has reached an agreement with Waste Management of Alameda County under which the company will provide the city with solid waste collection, recycling and disposal services for the next 15 years. The contract extension will provide new equipment and expanded service to residents. Oakland residents will have their yard debris collected along with their refuse – a new service, and 200,000 new refuse carts will be distributed to local households.

Under the agreement, Waste Management of Alameda County forgives the city of Oakland $11.8 million in debt in exchange for the ability to adjust its rates to allow for cost increases due to inflation. However, waste collection rate hikes cannot exceed 5 percent.

The agreement also results in less truck traffic by using a “one-pass” system designed to maximize recycling and yard debris collection. Currently, two trucks are required – one to pick up refuse and another to pick up recyclables, and the new yard debris collection would add a third truck. Under the new system, one truck with multiple compartments for material will do the job of three trucks.
