Lone Star Disposal Opens C&D Landfill

Lone Star Disposal LP, Houston, has announced the opening of the Lone Star Recycling & Disposal Facility, a Type IV construction and demolition (C&D) landfill located in Houston.

The 192-acre site is permitted for 14.7 million cubic yards of material and has an estimated life of more than 30 years.

"The landfill, along with the addition of another recycling facility opening in 2009, will allow increased operating efficiencies and enable us to better serve our customers and continued growth," says Brett Sarver, Lone Star president.

Canadian Province Considers C&D Recycling Plan

In an attempt to reduce the amount of construction and demolition (C&D) debris sent to landfills, the government of Alberta, Canada, and industry groups have announced the development of a program that would require companies to pay for not recycling C&D material, according to a report in the Calgary Herald (Calgary, Alberta, Canada).

Details for the plan are still under consideration, including the cost structure and how the program will be enforced. The basic plan would require contractors to submit a waste management plan and deposit when applying for building permits. The amount of the deposit that would be refunded is based on how much C&D material the company diverts from landfills, according to the report.

WRAP Launches C&D Recycling Program

The U.K.-based Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) has launched a new Capital Grant Program aimed at increasing capacity for reclaiming and recycling construction and demolition material in Scotland.

Supported by the Scottish Government, the funding program has been launched in response to feedback from construction contractors who say the waste management industry does not have sufficient capacity to recycle C&D debris.

The WRAP Construction and Demolition Capital Grant Program for Scotland includes off-cuts and timber, plastics, packaging scrap and soils. It is open to companies wanting to develop new or existing processing and recycling facilities and provides up to 30 percent of the total costs of plant, equipment and infrastructure.
