MISSOURI ROAD INCORPORATES SHINGLES
Construction Materials Recycling Association member Peerless Landfill has supplied recycled shingles used as part of the asphalt pavement for a two-mile section of Lindbergh Boulevard, a Missouri state road in southern St. Louis County. It is the first state road in Missouri to be paved from such a material.
Pace Construction did the paving work.
In an article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Dale Behnen, co-owner of Peerless Landfill, recounted the company’s seven-year struggle to convince others, including state transportation officials and paving contractors, of the viability of using the shingles in the highway environment.
But eventually the need to save landfill space and resources, along with the fact the material could stand up to the engineering requirements while saving money on the paving, won out.
Roger Brown, vice president of Pace Construction, says, "It’s only a matter of time before this becomes the norm. We saved 10 to 15 percent on costs by using the recycled shingles, and that means companies competing with us will probably have to start doing the same thing."
CMRA ACCEPTING AWARD NOMINEES
The Chicago-area-based Construction Materials Recycling Association (CMRA) is now accepting applications for its Second Annual C&D Recycling Awards Program.
The awards program is designed to recognize individuals, companies and organizations that have achieved operational excellence in recycling construction and demolition materials.
Awards are given in four categories:
• C&D Recycling Facility of the Year, which honors a nominated facility that handles all types of construction and demolition materials;
• Concrete/Asphalt Recycling Facility of the Year, which recognizes excellence in the recycling of concrete and asphalt;
• Government Recycling Program of the Year, which is targeted toward the nominated public sector recycling program that provides substantial contributions to construction and demolition recycling; and
• Recycler of the Year, which is an honor bestowed by the CMRA Board of Directors to the individual who has made superior and substantial contributions to his or her company and industry during the past year or during his or her career.
The criteria for the awards have been simplified, making applications much easier, according to the CMRA. Those criteria include research, planning, implementation, results and application quality.
Awards applications can be obtained through the CMRA by calling (630) 585-7530 or e-mailing info@cdrecycling.org. The awards brochure can also be downloaded from the CMRA Web site at www.cdrecycling.org.
