For the first time, the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) Ferrous Division has published data on worldwide steel recycling.
The survey, titled “Steel Scrap – A Raw Material for Steelmaking,” was carried out by former divisional general delegate Rolf Willeke and is based on a calculation model developed in cooperation with the German steel association, Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl. According to a press release issue by the BIR, “It gives a very accurate reflection of a market that so far was mainly characterized by approximate estimates rather than reliable figures.”
Ferrous Division President Christian Rubach says, “This initiative is in line with BIR’s policy to increasingly focus on providing statistical overviews for all its commodities, and the Ferrous Division takes pride in being the first to actually achieve this ambitious objective.”
According to the BIR, the data will be updated electronically every six months and a new edition of the booklet will be released yearly after each BIR World Recycling Conference in the spring.
Hard copies of the brochure are available upon request from the BIR Brussels Secretariat by phoning +32 2 627 57 70. More information is available from the association’s website, www.bir.org.
