 R. Baker & Son Completes Demo, Environmental Remediation Project in N.Y.C.

R. Baker & Son All Industrial Services Inc., Staten Island, N.Y., has completed an eight-phase demolition and environmental remediation project at Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn, N.Y.

The company was contracted to provide a turnkey package that consisted of the complete removal of asbestos-containing materials, demolition of three buildings, removal of all piping, conduit and other related services from an underground utility tunnel, demolition of all concrete slabs and foundations, removal of one underground storage tank and one above-ground storage tank and then restoration and backfilling of the area.

Prior to the demolition project, universal wastes, including mercury switches, ballasts and fluorescent light tubes, were collected, characterized, containerized and the shipped off site for proper recycling.

Using an engineering report prepared ahead of time as well as input from R. Baker’s internal demolition and asbestos abatement experts, it was decided to perform the work in a phased approach, starting at the top and working down. The top-down phased approach was also in compliance with the city’s variances and ensured that the building was stable throughout the process and did not require any temporary bracing or shoring.

On the project R. Baker & Son used several large hydraulic excavators with demolition attachments to demolish the remaining portions of the main building and the two smaller buildings.
