NAPW LUNCHES IN NEW YORK CITY

The National Association of Paper Stock Women (NAPW) held a luncheon Monday, March 26, in conjunction with the American Forest & Paper Association’s 130th annual Paper Week. The luncheon event featured award presentations as well as a keynote address by Bill Moore of Moore & Associates, Atlanta.

Kim Kiaunis, Canusa Hershman Recycling, based in Branford, Conn., was honored with the Women on the Rise award, which recognizes women who have "risen through the ranks" in their companies or in the industry. Kiaunis served as the first women president of the New England Papermill and Supply Association.

Bev Timmins of Weyerhaeuser, headquartered in Federal Way, Wash., also was honored in the Women on the Rise category. Timmins was recognized for her promotion to the head of a new division within Weyerhaeuser. In her new role as south central zone procurement manager, Timmins responsibilities include bringing together the plant and brokerage purchasing activities of Weyerhaeuser under a single umbrella.

NAPW presents the Volunteer of the Year Award to honor a member for his or her contributions to the NAPW. George Jucha, Independent Recycling Services, based in Pittsburgh, received the honor at this year’s luncheon. Jucha has been instrumental in developing and managing the NAPW Web site, a service that the association previously paid for, according to a news release from the NAPW.

Corporate Sponsor of the Year was Kruger Inc., Recycling Division, based in Albany, N.Y. The company’s contribution of $1,500 to the NAPW Canadian Scholarship Fund will allow the association to increase its scholarship to a pulp and paper science student at Three Rivers Quebec.

GREENLIGHT GREEN LOAN DISCOUNTS

Consumer mortgage lender Greenlight Financial Services, based in Irvine, Calif., has launched a program that rewards customers who follow green building principles.

The "Green Loan Discount" offers a discount on home loan fees to qualifying consumers who purchase, build or practice green principles that conform to LOHAS (Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability) standards.

To determine if they qualify for the discount, consumers are asked to fill out a questionnaire on the Greenlight Web site (www.greenlightloans.com). Qualifying customers will receive a full fee dismissal, amounting to a savings of $295.

HOFFMAN DONS GREEN GLOVES

In his debut at the Redstone Golf Club during the 61st annual Shell Houston Open, PGA golfer Charley Hoffman sported a green golf glove to represent Houston-based Waste Management, his new sponsor, and the formation of the Green Glove Charity.

The Charley Hoffman/Waste Management Green Glove Charity will benefit Keep Houston Beautiful, which will receive donations raised through the end of May. Contributions received afterwards will go to Keep America Beautiful projects nationwide. The timing coincides with the Great American Cleanup, an annual event in which millions of volunteers clean up communities across the country.

In announcing the charity, Hoffman was joined by Waste Management CEO David Steiner and Senior Vice President of Marketing Dave Aardsma.

Hoffman says his sponsorship with Waste Management "fits like a glove" because both he and the company have strong views on environmental stewardship.

"Waste Management is North America’s largest recycler, and, just like Charley, we believe in protecting the earth and environment as we do our business," Steiner says. "Our relationship with Charley is especially harmonious because Waste Management encourages the game of golf. We have created several golf courses at closed landfills and we are working with a major developer to create even more golf courses on Waste Management
landfills."
