Recycling Works at Dell

Dell has received the National Recycling Coalition’s (NRC) ninth annual Recycling Works Award for its efforts to promote producer responsibility.

The award recognizes Dell’s leadership in recycling computer equipment and its global policies.

"When it comes to product recovery and recycling, our commitment to our customers and our shared Earth is clear and simple: Programs that help consumers make a difference will always be a cornerstone of Dell’s global business," company Chairman and CEO Michael Dell says.

The NRC’s Kate Krebs says, "Dell’s innovative environmental initiatives implemented in the last year put them head and shoulders above any other electronics company. They are showing vision, leadership and commitment at levels we’ve never seen in this industry."

NRC’s Recycling Works Award has honored an organization or individual demonstrating leadership in recycling and environmental conservation since 1998.

GETTING A CHARGE OUT OF RECYCLING

The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corp. (RBRC) has announced the recipients of the group’s National Leadership Award.

Holloman Air Force Base (AFB), Alamogordo, N.M., was one of the two organizations recognized at the national level. To date, Holloman AFB has collected a total of 6,500 pounds of rechargeable batteries.

The RBRC also recognized Alberta Environment of Alberta, Canada, with a national award. To encourage the recycling of rechargeable batteries and cell phones, Alberta Environment worked with the RBRC in 2005 to conduct a six-month call-to-action campaign. As a result, 41 new sites from communities, public agencies and business joined 70 existing collection sites to collect 14,200 pounds of rechargeable batteries and cell phones, 37.5 percent more than the previous year.

Escambia County Department of Solid Waste Management, Cantonment, Fla.; Marion County Department of Public Works-Environmental Services, Salem, Ore.; New York City Police and Fire Departments; and Illinois Department of Corrections, Springfield, received regional awards recognizing their participation in Call2Recycle.

BANKING BUCKS AT BORDERS

RecycleBank, Philadelphia, has announced that Borders Inc., based in Ann Arbor, Mich., has signed on as a national partner with the company’s recycling rewards program, enabling RecycleBank customers to redeem their "RecycleBank Dollars" for a Borders coupon.

Households that participate in the RecycleBank program earn RecycleBank Dollars based on the weight of their recyclables. RecycleBank Dollars are then redeemed at businesses in the form of gift cards and coupons.

RecycleBank says its customers have diverted more than 3,000 tons or recyclables from landfills, earning more than 1.8 million RecycleBank Dollars.

"We are delighted to have Borders as a rewards partner; their commitment to community is an example of a successful socially responsible approach to business," Ron Gonen, RecycleBank CEO, says. "We are also thrilled to be able to offer our customers an opportunity for the rich shopping experience that Borders provides as a result of their recycling efforts."
