OHIO MAGNETICS MAKES HISTORY
Scrap recyclers may take their lifting magnets and drum magnets for granted, but the producers of the "Modern Marvels" television program are impressed.
A film crew from the program, which airs on The History Channel, part of A&E Television Networks, New York, was recently on location at the Ohio Magnetics-Stearns Magnetics plant in Maple Heights, Ohio, near Cleveland.
According to Ohio Magnetics Sales Manager Ken Richendollar, the crew was filming in February for a one-hour "Modern Marvels" episode on magnets that will air this spring.
One of the episode’s four segments will focus on the material handling aspects of magnets and will include footage shot at the Ohio Magnetics as well as at the Columbus Auto Shredding Inc. scrap yard in Columbus, Ohio, owned by Randall Hall.
A 71-inch Ohio Magnetics lifting magnet and two 84-inch-wide Stearns Magnetics drum units will appear in the program.
Other topics covered during the program will include ornamental refrigerator magnets and laser magnets being developed by researchers at universities, according to Richendollar.
WALKING ON BROKEN GLASS
EnviroGLAS Products, Plano, Texas, has announced that six NikeWomen stores have installed its EnviroPLANK floor tile.
The tiles are made from recycled glass and pigmented epoxy resin. They are installed in a staggered pattern to achieve a look similar to that of wood flooring, according to the company.
EnviroPLANK is available in a 6-inch-by-36-inch-by3/8-inch (nominal) tile and is priced affordably for areas measuring 1,500 square feet or less, according to EnviroGLAS.
EnviroPLANK tiles were also featured on an episode of HGTV’s "I Want That" that aired in March.

CALCULATING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
A Web-based "Paper Calculator" launched by Environmental Defense helps organizations measure the affect of their paper use on the environment and determine how they can reduce that impact.
The Paper Calculator provides users with U.S. average wood consumption, energy use and other environmental impacts of 13 types of paper across their life cycles. It allows users to compare the relative environmental impacts of papers made with different levels of recycled content and to see how using less paper or changing other specifications can reduce environmental impacts.
"Using less paper and switching to recycled paper conserves wood, water and energy and helps reduce pollution and waste," Environmental Defense Project Manager Tom Murray says. "The new Paper Calculator shows these benefits in a clear and comprehensive format."

GREEN PURCHASING MADE EASY
The Northeast Recycling Council (NERC) now offers a green purchasing guide at www.nerc.org/GreenPurchasing/greenpurchasingresources.html that helps companies evaluate their current purchasing practices and design a green purchasing program.
NERC also offers a vendor directory and a materials exchange directory where businesses can list items they want to recycle or request items their businesses need.
