WORKPLACE INCORPORATES SCRAP, ARCHITECTURE

Seattle Iron & Metals, Seattle, has incorporated the scrap business into the design of its new buildings located on the Duwamish waterway. The local Bumgardner architectural firm designed a work place that incorporates lightweight steel and concrete beams into office buildings that share space with the company’s 50-feet-high and 300- feet-long shredder.

A restored 1920s art deco building houses the company’s office functions. “We took the typical image of an industrial site-piles of scrap metal and thundering machines-and added an element of style,” says project architect Richard Glassman.
