SRI CONVENTION IS LARGEST IN ASSOCIATION’S HISTORY

The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, Washington, reports that its annual convention held in March 1997 in Las Vegas was its largest ever. ISRI officials say that more than 3,000 people attended the convention, which marked the 10th anniversary of ISRI’s existence. The show also had 185 indoor exhibitors and 20 outdoor displays.

Next year, ISRI will hold its convention in San Francisco. In 1999, the convention is currently scheduled to be moved to Orlando from Miami, and in the year 2000 it will be back in Las Vegas at the Bellagio resort, which is scheduled to open in 1998.

Of note, during the convention the association’s board of directors passed a new ISRI position on the reporting of recycling activities. The new position states that the collection of information about recyclable materials should be submitted only to government agencies responsible for recycling activities and not to those handling solid waste management; private sector recyclers should have their data treated with confidentiality; and recyclable material reports should be limited to data which a governmental entity has a legitimate need to know.

NRC AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS FROM RECYCLING TRUST FUND

The National Recycling Coalition, Alexandria, Va., recently awarded two college students scholarships to help them further their environmental science studies. Both students, Fred Mullner and Michael Pokler, attend Rutgers University’s Cook College in New Brunswick, N.J., and each was awarded $2,500.

The awards require academic merit, financial need and an interest in pursuing a career in recycling. The money from the scholarships comes from NRC’s Recycling Enterprises Trust Fund, which is dedicated exclusively to supporting the recycling work of individuals through special grants, awards, scholarships and internships.

CIWMB SPONSORS STATEWIDE RECYCLING AWARDS PROGRAM

The California Integrated Waste Management Board, Sacramento, Calif., will be accepting nominations for its annual Waste Reduction Awards Program until June 30. WRAP is a business recognition program designed to acknowledge businesses of all types and sizes in California that make outstanding efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle their non-hazardous waste and to use recycled materials.

In addition, top waste reduction leaders in up to 10 industry categories, ranging from amusement to manufacturing, will be selected for WRAP of the Year honors. Past winners include Anheuser-Busch and Walt Disney.
