American Pulverizer can build scrap metal shredders in monstrous sizes to tear through enormous quantities of automobile hulks and other forms of scrap. The company also recognizes, however, that not all recyclers need the biggest shredding plant on the planet.
Owners of American Pulverizer shredders are quick to heap praise on the American Pulverizer team for recognizing this basic fact. "We listened to the mid-sized scrap dealers express a need to shred and developed our super heavy-duty 60-inch machines to fill this need," says American Pulverizer Sales Manager Skip Anthony.
Larry and David Rifkin in Saginaw, Michigan opened up a new opportunity for small to mid-size scrap processors when they ordered the first 60 x 85 1500 hp automobile and scrap shredding system. The scrap markets were lean in 2001 when the Rifkins decided to make a gutsy move to install a shredding system. Both Larry and David took a huge chance when choosing the first 60 x 85 shredding system. American Pulverizer was committed to 60-inch mill project, and through dedication, cooperation and closely working with Larry and David, the system’s production capablities have exceeded both companies’ expectations. The Rifkins upgraded to a 2500 hp system and now easily shred 5,000 to 6,000 tons per month.
Although small in size, the machine processes whole cars, logged scrap, and a complete mix of typical obsolete scrap that other operators with larger shredders process.
Since the first system was installed, American Pulverizer continues to add customers to its list of 60x85 owners, with several orders in-house and many more to come.
Thanks to the Rifkins’ insight and American Pulverizer’s experience, opportunities for other small to medium sized yards have opened up.
The praise of customers who purchase the company’s shredders (in any size range) is distributed equally on two fronts: The quality of American Pulverizer equipment and the integrity of its people.
"Our American Pulverizer shredder has been very durable—the performance is everything they said it would be," says Fred Runde of Clayton County Recycling in Iowa.
Pete Bausone of Hawk Steel in Kennedale, Texas, recently purchased his second American Pulverizer shredder. After running his first plant for several years, he had no hesitation regarding his next purchase. "Their people know what they’re talking about," says Pete. "I have a lot of respect for Chris Griesedieck, for Skip, and for the technical support people at American Pulverizer; they are Johnny-on-the-spot helping us—that is the key. They have defined loyalty, and finding that kind of loyalty is rare today."
American Pulverizer is helping scrap recyclers install shredders in its entire range of sizes, from 98 x 104 down to 60 x 60 models. What customers say American Pulverizer does best is match the right shredder to the task at hand and to the market conditions.
Chris Cassell of Glenview Iron & Metal in Smiths Falls, Ontario, says that many of the shredders he first looked at "were expensive and bigger than we needed." Working with American Pulverizer, however, Glenview was able to purchase a 60 x 60 model "that is built very, very rugged and in our price range," according to Chris.
Anthony Rubino of Rubino Brothers, Stamford, Conn., was looking for a similar solution. "We’re a small yard so it had to be the right size," says Anthony, who selected a 60 x 85 American Pulverizer plant for his 2.35-acre site. "They were the ones who had a layout we liked—they seemed to be the best fit and the most knowledgeable about shredders this size," Anthony adds.
"American Pulverizer helped us through a lengthy decision-making process," notes Gregg Rosen of Kimco Steel Sales Ltd., whose Ontario company is installing an American Pulverizer 60 x 85 model. "It’s a big step for us, and Skip has spent five years working with us and has brought a lot of other great people from their team to the table."
The sales, installation and service processes all receive praise from American Pulverizer customers. Fred Runde in Iowa says the start-up of his company’s 80 x 104 "went absolutely marvelously. We cranked it up and everything ran and we just kept running," he comments.
Remarks John Marynowski, Executive VP of OmniSource, "The outstanding performance and reliability of our first 98 x 104 American Pulverizer system in Jackson, Mich, was a key factor in our decision to purchase three additional systems for several other of our scrap processing facilities."
