Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada-based Algoma Steel Group Inc. says the company and the negotiating committee of United Steelworkers Local Union 2251 have agreed to a 15-day extension beyond the July 31, 2022, expiration date of the previous collective agreement “for the purpose of continued discussions.”
Comments Algoma Steel President and CEO Michael Garcia, “This extension demonstrates the willingness of the parties to work toward an agreement that provides fair and equitable improvements to wages and benefits and supports our collective future under the electric arc transformation.”
In July, Algoma announced a separate contract agreement with the union representing some of its salaried employees. It also positioned that contract as helping to prepare for the planned conversion of its Ontario complex from being a basic oxygen furnace (BOF) producer to becoming a scrap-fed electric arc furnace (EAF) operator.
