A Shredder Shakeout

Several factors over the past couple of years have led to the number of working auto shreddres in the United States to decline.

The total number of operating autmobile shredders stands at 187, down from a total of 202 in mid-1998.

Several factors may have contributed to a decline in the number of overall shredding plants:

  • Tough operating conditions brought on by low per-ton ferrous scrap prices made operating profitably more difficult.
  • Corporate buyouts of many shredding plants took place, some with the intent of gaining market share in a given region while ultimately reducing shredder capacity.
  • A trend by some operators toward mammoth shredder plants with greater capacity has caused one shredder to do the work of two in some locations.

Following is a list of U.S. operating shredder plants being used to shred automobiles and other large ferrous scrap items.
