Uniforet has announced that
production at its Port-Cartier pulp mill, which was suspended on February 16,
will not resume before April 2, 2001. This measure is seen as necessary as the
result of a temporary slowing of demand for commercial pulp on the world
market.
The extended suspension of
production will further reduce the mill's output by roughly 11,800 metric tons.
Altogether, the suspension will cut production by 25,800 metric tons, or 12.9%
of the mill's estimated pulp output for 2001.
Uniforet has also announced
that one shift at its Port-Cartier sawmill will be laid off for an indefinite
period, effective March 5. The sawmill will continue operations with two
shifts, while work in the planing mill will continue with three shifts as
usual.
