<b>Survey Finds Consumers Favor Recycled Paperboard</B>

Close to 80 percent of consumers surveyed favor companies that use recycled paperboard in their product packaging. The survey, sponsored by the 100% Recycled Paperboard Alliance, also determined that close to 90 percent of consumers feel it important for companies to do something good for the environment.

The survey, conducted in Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and Edison, NJ, interviewed 400 primary shoppers. The study focused on consumer attitudes towards the environment and recycling symbols in general as well as comparing five pairs of packages, made of recycled paperboard and virgin paperboard (SBS), on issues of quality, attractiveness and performance.

The following are key study findings with very high levels of consumer agreement are:

78% of people feel a company that uses 100% recycled paperboard packaging is forward looking.

61% are more inclined to purchase products from a company that uses 100% recycled paperboard packaging.

85% believe that using 100% recycled paperboard in packaging will make a better future for their children.

80% feel they are doing something good for the environment when they buy products packaged in 100% recycled paperboard packaging.

When asked about the 100% Recycled Paperboard symbol, 70% found the symbol to be understandable and 75% said they want to see it on more packages.

The study also investigated three attributes of the packages quality, attractiveness and performance. In every pair of products (recycled and SBS), the majority of shoppers (63%) either rated the recycled package better or no different than the SBS package in terms of quality. One fifth of all responses fell into the no different category, while 42% favored recycled packages and 38% favored SBS packages.
