Stora Looks to Build Recycled Newsprint Machine in Belgium

Stora Enso intends to build a 400,000 metric tons per year newsprint/SC paper machine using recovered paper as raw material. The mill will be built in Belgium. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of next year. The project is estimated to cost slightly more than $400 million.

The company also announced plans to permanently close two machines with a combined capacity of 230,000 metric tons per year. The machines slated to be closed are located in Belgium and Finland. Additionally, Stora Enso will be closing a coating machine in Sweden. The two paper machines will be closed when the new machine goes on line.

The company cited its plan to eliminate non-profitable machines, as well as improve the overall competitiveness of the company.

The company expects to pull most of the recovered fiber to feed the new machine from within a 300 mile radius of the mill.
