Smurfit-Stone Container shut down a second paper machine the first of this month. The mill had been operating at 75 percent of capacity since shutting down one machine the first of last month.
The company attributed the decision to soaring energy costs at the mill, as well as a decline in the demand for the finished product.
The mill’s third machine will continue to operate.
In a release the company said it would restart the machines when markets improve and energy prices stabilize. At full capacity the mill is capable of producing around 2,200 tons of linerboard a day.
