Chelsea Center Releases Request

The Chelsea Center for Recycling and Economic Development released a Request for Response focusing on developing innovations to increase the demand for, and use of, recyclable materials by Massachusetts’ industries. The request is earmarked for researchers at universities and private research institutions.

·The research aims to focus on improving the demand in the following areas: broadening of feedstock allowances in manufacturing to increase the percentage of recyclables.

·Developing technologies to overcome barriers to feedstock conversion.

·Developing new scrap-based composites with direct application to Massachusetts businesses.

·Development of new products, processes, or technologies that use material otherwise sent to disposal facilities.

·Technologies that, by reducing costs or improving quality, will help create demand for scrap in the state, such as cost reduction in collection and processing, or improved sorting technologies.

·Investigating and improving environmental, health and safety issues involved in the manufacturing of recycled-content products.

Developing technology or product design that enables extended producer responsible through reuse or recycling.

The Chelsea Center will be putting top priority on the following: electronics, food waste, textiles, tires, wood, carpet, glass mixed paper, and plastics.

Proposals are due by April 12. Final selections will be made by the end of May.

Copies of the request are available by contacting Jodie Siegel, director of technical programs at (617) 884-4324 or e-mail at jodies@chelseacenter.org .
