Boise Cascade Corp. reported
first quarter net income of $7.1 million, compared with $39.6 million the first
quarter last year. Fourth quarter net income was $20.7 million.
Sales in first quarter 2001
decreased 5% to $1.9 billion, compared with $2.0 billion in the first quarter a
year ago. Sales in fourth quarter 2000 were $1.9 billion.
George J. Harad, chairman
and CEO, said, ``First-quarter results from operations were substantially lower
than those of a year ago. Significantly weaker wood products markets and higher
energy costs in our paper business offset solid performance in office products
distribution and continued progress in our moving to value-added products and
improving other costs across the company.''
