The city of Parchment, Mich.
inked a deal with American Tissue Co. to reopen a paper mill that was closed last
year by Crown Vantage. According to a report in the Kalamazoo Gazette, the
City Commission voted to lease the mill to American Tissue for $1 per year, with
plans for the paper company to eventually buy the facility.
Although the pact gives
American Tissue a year to put the plant back into operation, company officials
estimated it could happen within weeks.
For $1 a year, American
Tissue will lease Mill1, Mill 2, the wastewater treatment plant and the power
plant on the 90-acre site. The agreement does not include the old
parchmentizing plant, which is the original 98-year-old plant, and the former
administration building, both of which the city will retain for its own future
development.
