Abitibi-Consolidated completed the sale of its
Chandler, Que., mill to Fonds de solidarite des travailleurs du Quebec. The cost
of the sale was $35 million.
The conversion of the mill will meet A-C’s pre-condition
of manufacturing a product other than one of its core grades, including newsprint.
Abitibi-Consolidated is the world’s largest producer of newsprint.
Over the past several years the company has been narrowing
its product line, focusing on the newsprint and groundwood paper industries. The
company operates 29 mills in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Asia.
In total the company produces 6.4 million metric tons of newsprint, 1.8 million
metric tons of value-added papers, 2.3 billion board feet of lumber and 444,000
metric tons of market pulp.
