Future ONP Supply Expected to be Tight

The American Forest and Paper Association announced that old newspapers would see the largest future consumption growth among the major recovered paper grade categories. AFPA recent capacity survey concluded that through the year 2003, the use of ONP will increase an average of 3.5 percent per year, well above other paper industry growth rates.

William Moore, president of Moore & Associates, indicated “after a decade of mostly oversupply, ONP will see a stronger demand in the years to come. This was evident during the end of last year when most recovered paper grade prices were falling and ONP held its ground. ONP demand growth will not be limited to the United States; the Canadian, European and Pacific Rim newsprint producers all continue to add recycled newsprint capacity.”

In order to assist the newsprint and recycle paperboard sectors with their ONP needs, Moore & Associates announced an expansion of the company’s $mart$upply database. Demand for ONP has grown steadily over the last 12 years as the newsprint industry continued to add more recycle fiber to their sheet. During this time, U.S. municipal curbside recycling programs expanded to produce an adequate supply of ONP for the industry. However, over the last three to four years, there has been almost no growth in introduction of residential recycling programs coupled with stagnant collection activity.

Moore & Associates’ $mart$upply database improvements target under-recovered communities throughout the country. The $mart$supply approach also concentrated on how the most readily available supply of ONP can be obtained. The company currently has a $mart$upply public education project underway in Minnesota to increase the recovery of residential paper grades.
