Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling, headquartered in Owego, New York, has announced its Ben Weitsman of New Castle location in Pennsylvania will open its doors at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 7.
The company says construction at the New Castle site and hiring of staff members has been completed.
Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling constructed all new buildings, equipped the facility with new equipment and fully paved and landscaped the entire yard. The opening occurs after a period of heavy demolition to take down the old Ferrotech buildings and fully construct the brand new shredder, full nonferrous downstream and retail scrap metal recycling facility.
The 3,000-horsepower Wendt shredder was originally slated to go online two years ago, but the processor encountered permitting delays, according to American Metal Market.
“The outpouring of support and excitement regarding our new Ben Weitsman of New Castle facility has been nothing short of amazing,” says Adam Weitsman, CEO of Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling. “Everyone in and around New Castle have been very kind and welcoming, we are proud to be a part of such a strong and caring community. We believe in being a good neighbor and will be involved in a number of community initiatives and activities that are important to residents in the area.”
The New Castle scrap yard, formerly Ferrotech, was acquired by Weitsman at a bankruptcy auction and has since seen tens of millions of dollars’ worth of investment, according to the company. The facility has hired nearly 30 employees to start and will be hiring additional personnel in the near future.
The hours of operation for the new yard are Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. As the site of the company’s first shredder outside of the flagship facility in Owego, New York, Upstate Shredding says the New Castle location provides access to new markets of scrap for the company.
Upstate Shredding - Weitsman Recycling, America owned and operated, is the East Coast’s largest privately held scrap metal processor, operating 17 locations throughout New York and Pennsylvania. The company will process more than 1 million tons of ferrous and 300 million pounds of nonferrous metal in 2016. Upstate Shredding - Weitsman Recycling was recently honored as 2015 Scrap Company of the Year by AMM as well as 2014 top scrap recycling company in the world by Platts, a division of McGraw-Hill and the premier resource for metals and mining worldwide.
