Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling receives recognition

Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling, headquartered in Owego, New York, has been recognized by American Metal Market (AMM) as Scrap Company of the Year at the annual AMM awards dinner at the Edison ballroom in New York City June 9, 2015.

The company was nominated in the large company category, which recognizes companies that have $100 million in annual revenue, as was Sims Metal Management, Commercial Metals Co. and Scrap Metal Services.

“We scored a major upset in winning the 2015 award for AMM Scrap Company of the Year in North America,” said Adam Weitsman, CEO of Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling.

“This is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of our 500 employees,” he continued. “It wouldn’t be possible without each and every one of our employees working hard day in and day out.

For the past six years, AMM has recognized innovation and excellence in steel and related industries with its Awards for Steel Excellence. Winners are selected by a panel of judges with extensive steel industry leadership experience. Judges evaluate the candidates using a point-based qualitative approach to determine the winners in each category. Nomination and judging processes are audited by and in full compliance with Euromoney/Institutional investor guidelines and standards to ensure integrity and objectivity, according to AMM.

Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling was named the top scrap recycling firm in the world by Platts at an awards ceremony in London last May as well. Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling, the East Coast’s largest privately held scrap metal processor, has a number of locations in the Northeast United States and Canada, including two locations each in Owego and Ithaca, as well as locations in the New York cities of Binghamton, Brant, Jamestown, Hornell, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany and Allegany; the Pennsylvania cities of Scranton and New Castle. The company also has two locations in the Montreal area in Canada.

Upstate Shredding says it will process more than 1.05 million tons of ferrous and 250 million pounds of nonferrous scrap metal in 2015.
